The Gera School commemorated India’s 80th Independence Day with a celebration that blended patriotism with pageantry, bringing together students, parents and staff. The Chief Guest was Smt. Sharda Tai Sawaikar, a freedom fighter who fought against Portuguese rule during the State’s liberation struggle. The second edition of the student-led Independence Day Mini Fete reinforced the values of leadership, service and community engagement while raising funds for the Interact Club’s upcoming community service initiatives.
The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag, followed by a welcome address by the student emcees and a soulful rendition by the students of Grades 6 to 12 of the hymn: To Thee, Our God, We Fly. Students from the Early Years, Primary, Middle and Senior School presented a series of performances celebrating India’s rich heritage, unity and diversity through music, dance, theatre and monologues. Every performance was outstanding: from the Invocation dance, the skits by Grade 5 and Grade 12 students to the musical performance by students across school and the dance performances by students of the Early Years and of Grades 3 and 4, every performance was scintillating and was befitting the solemnity and grandeur of the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Carol Joseph, Principal of The Gera School, said, “Independence Day is an opportunity for our students to reflect on the values that define our nation and understand the responsibility that comes with freedom. At The Gera School, we strive to create learning experiences that inspire empathy, leadership and service, empowering our students to become thoughtful citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.”
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest,Smt. Sawaikar said, “The true spirit of Independence lies in looking after the State we live in, understanding that freedom did not come easy, and that the one way to pay tribute to the sacrifices is to serve others and serve our nation for we are one people.”
The celebrations reflected The Gera School’s commitment to holistic education by integrating academic excellence with experiential learning, creativity and social responsibility. Through initiatives that combine cultural expression with community engagement, the school continues to nurture confident, compassionate and globally minded learners prepared to make a positive difference in the world.
A key highlight of the celebration was the second edition of the Independence Day Mini Fete, organised by the Interact Club following the success of last year’s initiative. Student volunteers from the Middle and Senior School showcased handcrafted products including handmade candles, crocheted creations, hand painted tote bags, decorated mason jars and a thrift stall, all created through collaborative effort. The initiative received an enthusiastic response from parents, students and guests, with the proceeds set to support the Interact Club’s upcoming community service projects.
