MNRE marks International Sun Day with public event; PM Surya Ghar scheme drives rapid rooftop solar adoption
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) organised a ‘Run for Sun’ marathon in the national capital on International Sun Day, spotlighting India’s growing focus on solar energy. The event also coincided with the installation of 2.7 lakh rooftop solar systems across the country in April.
Key Announcements / Highlights
2.7 lakh rooftop solar installations recorded in April.
‘Run for Sun’ marathon held in New Delhi with wide public participation.
Solar capacity in India has grown significantly over the past decade.
Event Overview
The marathon took place at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, featuring 2-km and 5-km race categories. Participants from different age groups took part, reflecting growing public engagement with renewable energy initiatives.
The event was aimed at promoting awareness about solar energy and encouraging adoption of sustainable practices.
Official Statement
MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said the initiative represents a broader effort to promote clean energy and self-reliance. He emphasised the government’s focus on expanding access to solar power at the household level.
Growth in Rooftop Solar
Officials highlighted that the recent installations were carried out under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
Under this programme, more than 30 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide, benefiting over 45 lakh households. The scheme provides financial support and simplified procedures to encourage residential adoption of solar energy.
Context / Background
India’s solar capacity has grown significantly in recent years, reaching around 150 gigawatts as of March 2026, compared to just 2.82 GW in 2014.
The country has also achieved a major milestone, with about half of its total installed power capacity now coming from non-fossil-fuel sources well ahead of its 2030 target.
Public Impact
The expansion of rooftop solar systems can reduce electricity costs for households and promote energy independence.
It also contributes to lowering carbon emissions and supports India’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.
Conclusion and Outlook
The ‘Run for Sun’ initiative reflects a broader push to increase public participation in renewable energy adoption.
With continued policy support and growing awareness, rooftop solar is expected to play a key role in India’s long-term energy strategy.
