MoSPI to Host National Workshop on SDGs, Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics in Patna

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will organise a two-day national workshop on Monitoring Frameworks of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics on March 18–19, 2026, in Patna.

The workshop is being co-organised with the Government of Bihar, with technical support from the United Nations Development Programme.

Strengthening Data for Better Governance

The initiative aims to strengthen capacity in three key areas SDGs, environmental accounting, and gender statistics to support evidence-based policymaking and governance.

MoSPI has been actively working to improve the quality and robustness of data systems in India, and this workshop is part of that ongoing effort.

Participation from Government and Global Agencies

The event will bring together representatives from:

  • Central ministries
  • State and Union Territory departments
  • International organisations and UN agencies

Senior officials, including the Bihar Minister for Planning and Development, the Secretary of MoSPI, and the Chief Secretary of Bihar, are expected to attend the inaugural session.

Day 1: Focus on SDGs and Gender Statistics

The first day of the workshop will focus on Sustainable Development Goals and gender data systems.

Key discussions will include:

  • Alignment of National Indicator Framework (NIF) with State Indicator Frameworks
  • Use of SDG data for policy planning beyond monitoring
  • Role of gender statistics in women-led development
  • Strengthening institutional frameworks for gender-responsive governance

Experts and representatives from UN agencies will also share global best practices and insights.

Day 2: Emphasis on Environmental Accounting

The second day will focus on environmental aspects, particularly the compilation of environment accounts.

Discussions will cover:

  • The SEEA (System of Environmental-Economic Accounting) framework
  • Valuation of forest resources and ecosystem services
  • Biodiversity accounting methods
  • State-level experiences in environmental data compilation

Environmental experts will provide insights into improving environmental statistics and integrating them into policymaking.

Driving Evidence-Based Decision Making

The workshop aims to create a stronger data ecosystem that supports informed decision-making at both national and state levels. By integrating SDG monitoring, gender statistics, and environmental accounting, the initiative seeks to improve governance outcomes and sustainable development planning.

Key Takeaway

With participation from multiple stakeholders and international agencies, the Patna workshop highlights India’s growing focus on data-driven governance. Strengthening statistical systems across SDGs, gender, and environment is expected to play a crucial role in shaping inclusive and sustainable development policies.
