Veteran Indian actor Pankaj Dheer, best remembered for his powerful portrayal of the tragic warrior Karna in the legendary television series Mahabharat, died today at the age of 68 following a prolonged fight against cancer. The news has sent ripples through the entertainment industry and among fans who grew up watching the epic show on Doordarshan in the late 1980s. Dheer’s passing highlights the ongoing challenges of cancer, a disease that affects millions worldwide, and serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of classic Indian television on cultural memory.
Dheer had been battling cancer for several months, with reports indicating a relapse earlier this year that required major surgery. Despite his efforts to recover, he succumbed to the illness in Mumbai this morning, according to close associates and official statements. Producer and friend Ashoke Pandit confirmed the details to PTI, stating, “He passed away due to cancer this morning. He had been in and out of hospital in the past months.” The Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), where Dheer served as former Honorary General Secretary and erstwhile Chairman, released an official statement expressing grief: “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA’s former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will be held today at 4:30 pm, next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.”
Born on November 9, 1956, Pankaj Dheer began his career in the film industry but rose to nationwide fame with his role as Karna in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat, which aired from 1988 to 1990. His performance as the noble yet doomed archer, known for his unbreakable armor (kavach) and tragic fate, resonated deeply with audiences, making him a household name. In a past interview with India Forums, Dheer reflected on the character’s popularity and the physical risks involved in filming, including a near-fatal chariot accident and an arrow injury that required surgery. Beyond Mahabharat, Dheer showcased his versatility in other popular TV shows like Chandrakanta, where he played the formidable King Shivdutt from 1994 to 1996, as well as The Great Maratha, Yug, and Badho Bahu. He also appeared in films such as Baadshah alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Sadak, Soldier, and Sanam Bewafa.
Dheer’s contributions extended beyond acting. In 2006, he co-founded Visage Studioz, a shooting studio in Mumbai’s Jogeshwari area, with his brother Satluj Dheer. He later established the Abhinay Acting Academy to nurture new talent in the industry. His son, Nikitin Dheer, has followed in his footsteps as an actor, known for roles in films like Chennai Express and Jodhaa Akbar, and is married to actress Kratika Sengar. Dheer is also survived by his wife, Anita Dheer.
Reactions from the industry and fans have poured in on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), with news outlets and admirers sharing tributes to his legacy. The Hindustan Times noted, “Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer has passed away. The television actor was best known for his role as Karan in BR Chopra’s Mahabharat.” CNN-News18 added, “Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, known for his powerful role as Karna in Mahabharat, passed away on October 15 after battling cancer. He was 68.” These responses underscore how Dheer’s work bridged generations, influencing Indian pop culture and inspiring discussions on themes like loyalty, fate, and heroism from ancient epics.
Dheer’s death comes amid growing awareness about cancer in India, where the disease claims hundreds of thousands of lives annually, according to health authorities. His story emphasizes the importance of early detection and ongoing medical support, even after initial treatments. As the entertainment world mourns, his roles continue to live on through reruns and digital platforms, ensuring his contributions remain a part of India’s storytelling heritage.
