The government has said that the WAVES OTT platform, launched by Prasar Bharati in November 2024, has crossed 84 lakh registered users.

The update was shared in a written reply in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan.

Key Highlights

  • WAVES OTT platform records over 84 lakh registered users
  • Offers TV, radio, films, web series, live events, and archival content
  • PB-SHABD news service available in 15 Indian languages
  • Free access to PB-SHABD extended till March 2027
  • Content accessible across urban and remote regions

Expansion of Digital Public Broadcasting

The WAVES OTT platform was introduced as a digital streaming service to bring Prasar Bharati’s television and radio content to online audiences.

It hosts a wide range of programming, including entertainment, cultural shows, educational content, and live broadcasts, along with archived material from Doordarshan and All India Radio.

The platform’s growing user base reflects increasing demand for digital access to public broadcaster content.

Official Statement

In his reply, the minister said the platform is designed to improve accessibility and reach of public service broadcasting across the country.

He noted that both WAVES OTT and PB-SHABD are part of efforts to make government-backed content more widely available in multiple languages.

Multilingual News Through PB-SHABD

Alongside WAVES, the government has expanded the reach of PB-SHABD, launched in March 2024.

The service distributes news content in 15 Indian languages, including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, and Urdu.

Initially offered free for one year, access to PB-SHABD has now been extended until March 2027.

Focus on Archival Content

A significant feature of the WAVES platform is its repository of archival programmes.

Classic television shows, documentaries, and cultural content are being uploaded in phases to improve discoverability and audience engagement.

This effort aims to preserve and promote India’s broadcast heritage while making it accessible to newer audiences.

Context and Background

India’s public broadcasting system, led by Prasar Bharati, has traditionally relied on television and radio for outreach.

With increasing internet penetration and smartphone usage, there has been a shift towards digital platforms.

The launch of WAVES OTT aligns with this transition, positioning public broadcasters alongside private streaming services.

Public Impact

The platform provides free or affordable access to diverse content, including regional programming that may not be widely available on commercial platforms.

For users in smaller towns and rural areas, it offers an opportunity to access educational, cultural, and informational content in their preferred language.

The multilingual news service also helps improve access to verified information across different regions.

Conclusion

The growth of WAVES OTT and expansion of PB-SHABD indicate a broader push towards digital public broadcasting in India.

With continued investment in content and accessibility, these platforms are expected to play a larger role in delivering information and entertainment to a diverse national audience.
