MRSAC to be registered under Companies Act as Section 8 entity, aiming to improve efficiency in planning and geospatial services
The Maharashtra government has approved the conversion of the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) into a company to enhance its operational efficiency. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur on April 8.
Key Announcements / Highlights
MRSAC, currently registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, will now be restructured as a company under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. Section 8 entities are non-profit organisations established to promote public interest objectives.
The move is expected to streamline execution across a range of government projects that rely on geospatial technologies. These include urban planning, road network development, watershed and hilly area management, agriculture technology, groundwater studies, and environmental monitoring such as mangrove mapping.
The organisation will continue to operate from Nagpur, with additional centres in Pune and Mumbai.
Official Statement
State officials indicated that the restructuring is intended to modernise the institution’s functioning and enable it to better respond to emerging technological and administrative demands.
The Chief Secretary will serve as the ex-officio chairperson of the new entity, while a Managing Director position will be created. The organisation will function under a Board of Directors.
Context / Background
Established in 1988, MRSAC has played a key role in applying geospatial tools for planning and governance in Maharashtra. Over time, its scope has expanded with the adoption of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud-based systems.
However, operating under a society structure has posed limitations in terms of flexibility and scalability, prompting the government to consider a corporate framework.
Public Impact
The conversion is expected to improve project delivery timelines and enhance data-driven decision-making in sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, and environmental management.
For citizens, this could translate into more efficient public services, better urban planning, and improved resource management across the state.
Conclusion
With the transition to a company structure, MRSAC is expected to play a more agile role in supporting Maharashtra’s development projects. The new framework aims to align the organisation with evolving technological needs and strengthen its contribution to governance and planning.
