The Ministry of Railways has cleared two key infrastructure projects in Gujarat and Bihar to improve rail connectivity and reduce congestion on busy routes. The approved works include a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover at Kosamba in Gujarat and a rail bypass at Bhagalpur in Bihar, with a combined investment of ₹647.58 crore.
The projects are expected to enhance train movement, improve punctuality, and strengthen the railway network in both regions.
Key Announcements and Highlights
The two approved projects are:
- Kosamba Rail Over Rail Flyover (Gujarat): ₹344.38 crore
- Bhagalpur Rail Bypass (Bihar): ₹303.20 crore
Both initiatives focus on increasing line capacity, reducing operational bottlenecks, and ensuring safer train operations.
Kosamba Rail Flyover to Enable Seamless Connectivity
The Kosamba–Umrapada section, currently undergoing gauge conversion, will be connected to the Mumbai–Vadodara main line through a new Rail Over Rail flyover.
At present, the presence of the Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment makes direct surface-level connectivity difficult. The flyover will eliminate the need for such crossings and allow uninterrupted train movement.
Once completed, the project is expected to:
- Improve safety by removing surface crossings
- Enable smoother integration of the converted line
- Enhance efficiency on a key Western Railway route
Bhagalpur Bypass to Reduce Congestion
The second project involves constructing a 13.38 km rail bypass in Bihar, linking Gonudham Halt on the Barahat–Bhagalpur section with Sabour on the Bhagalpur–Sahibganj route.
Currently, the Barahat–Bhagalpur stretch is operating beyond its capacity, leading to congestion and delays. Trains are also required to reverse engines at Bhagalpur, adding to operational inefficiencies.
The new bypass is expected to:
- Decongest Bhagalpur junction
- Eliminate time-consuming engine reversals
- Improve punctuality and overall train flow
Context and Background
Indian Railways has been focusing on capacity expansion and network modernisation to meet rising passenger and freight demand. Projects like gauge conversion and dedicated freight corridors are part of this broader strategy.
However, such developments often require additional infrastructure to ensure seamless integration and efficient operations making projects like the Kosamba flyover and Bhagalpur bypass essential.
Public Impact
These projects are likely to benefit both passengers and freight movement by:
- Reducing travel delays and congestion
- Improving safety on busy routes
- Enhancing reliability of train schedules
- Supporting economic activity through better logistics
For regions like Gujarat and Bihar, improved rail connectivity can also boost regional development and trade.
Conclusion
The approval of these two rail infrastructure projects reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening India’s railway network. By addressing congestion and improving connectivity, the initiatives are expected to deliver long-term gains in efficiency, safety, and service quality across key routes.
